Winter and summer in Aspen may be the peak seasons for recreational activity, when cultural events of all kinds hit their stride and restaurants brim with activity, but the shoulder seasons are also special in their own right.
Coined the “Secret Season” by the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, mid-May to mid-June offers a more relaxed pace when fewer people are in town yet there’s still plenty to do.

As for events, take part in the Ride for the Pass on May 21, with a bike ride to the top of Independence Pass at 12,095 feet, the week before it opens to vehicles. This annual community event benefits the Independence Pass Foundation. The Aspen Gran Fondo takes place on June 11 with Lance and friends. This 50-mile group ride features steep climbs, rolling hills, flat sections and beautiful scenery, open to all riders.
