Colorado’s Top Cycling Events of 2018

Colorado maintains a long-established reputation for welcoming those who recreate or race on two wheels. Between the proud history of fabled Colorado-based bike races such as the Red Zinger Classic, the Coors Classic or the Pro Challenge, our state is proud of its cycling history.

The Little Nell embraces Colorado’s cycling heritage, while also welcoming the present and future. Shared below are some of our favorite cycling events of the year.

June
The 2018 Ride the Rockies Bike Tour – June 9-15, 2018

As the name suggests, this multi-day ride is a chance for cyclists to tour nearly the entire state. Beginning in 1986, each subsequent year seems to increase the popularity of this challenging and awe-inspiring ride. This year’s ride passes through a handful of our Rocky Mountain neighbors, Breckenridge, Edwards, Steamboat Springs, Grand Lake and Winter Park.

July
Triple Bypass – July 14, 2018

There may be no better excuse to take on the Triple Bypass than to celebrate its 30th year. During July of 1988, this grueling climb began, but the leg burning continues each and every season. During 2018, riders completing the full Triple will conquer Juniper, Loveland and Vail Pass. (And for the exceptionally hardy riders, there had been the Double Triple Wondering about the Double Triple Bypass from Evergreen to Avon and back again the next day. In celebration of the 30th Anniversary, the race is going back to its roots and offering the classic single day version only.)

August
Copper Triangle – August 4, 2018

Gaining more than 6,500 feet and topping three iconic mountain passes, the Copper Triangle is among favorite alpine spins in Colorado. The ride helps to benefit one of our all-time favorite professional riders, Davis Phinney and the Davis Phinney Foundation raising funds for Parkinson’s research and support.

Velorama – August 17-19, 2018

The new-kid-on-the-block, Velorama debuted in 2017 and is a one of a kind music festival combined with the Colorado Classic, a professional stage race held in Colorado. Unlike any bike-specific event in the country, Velorama is truly a must-see for cycling enthusiasts and lovers of great music!

Clip in with Christian – August 19-23, 2018

Our favorite Colorado cycling event, the annual Clip-In with Christian Cycling Camp allows cyclists the chance to ride with former Tour de France racers. Christian is an American cycling legend and accompanies riders as they tour Aspen’s most famed roads. In addition to Christian, well-known former pros George Hincapie and Craig Lewis join riders for this once-in-a-lifetime cycling camp.

September
Pedal the Plains – September 14-16, 2018

Colorado cycling is often synonymous with mountain climbs and screaming descents, but not to be forgotten are the incredible views of the Eastern Plains. Pedal the Plains is unique and allows riders the ability to celebrate our agricultural heritage and frontier roots. The legacy of the American buffalo lives on as cyclists tour our vast grasslands.

Tour of the Moon – September 29, 2018

The Tour of the Moon is a premier recreational ride held nearby on the Western Slope of Colorado. Beginning in Grand Junction, the Tour of the Moon showcases the high desert landscape of Colorado and our National Monument.

October
Independence Pass – Early October

Although Independence Pass makes for a great ride nearly anytime between Memorial Weekend and November, we’re most fond of tackling this iconic Colorado climb during early October. As our namesake aspen trees begin to change into their fall colors, the views become increasingly remarkable. The contrast of Colorado blue spruce or douglas fir with vivid yellow aspen leaves is a sight to behold. From the comfort of your saddle and whatever pace you set, a ride up Independence Pass will reward cyclists long after completion.

November
VeloSwap – November 3, 2018

Rounding out our list of Colorado cycling events is, VeloSwap, the annual bike expo held in Denver. VeloSwap is a massive bike exchange and product showcase allowing both brands and consumers alike a chance to mingle, swap or purchase parts and revel in their love of cycling!

At The Little Nell, we welcome serious and casual cyclists alike. Contact us to discover how we can play host to your next Colorado bicycling escape!
